Tell me a Story Brief

Proffessional Practice 1: Destination

Brief: Tell me a Story

Brief:

"Develop a 5-frame narrative inspired by the imagery presented
within one of three given paintings.
• A Violent Forcing of the Frog by Hieronymus Bosch
• Our Town by Stephen Lowry
• Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Take note of the imagery, figures, characters, setting, mood and
atmosphere. The paintings should be a starting point for your ideas,
your story may expand on a particular character, be inspired by the
landscape, atmosphere or situation."

The three given paintings, immediate impressions:

"Our Town" By LS Lowry

  • Dull, almost sepia, colours.
  • Despite movement, atmosphere and mood seems calm almost melancholic.
  • Subject matter is everyday, figures and buildings
  • Lack of Cars suggests and earlier time period, (1965)
  • Coats and overcast sky communicates a colder season, Autumn or Winter.
  • Figures gestures suggest movement, purpose and speed.

"Hunters in the Snow" by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

  • Beautiful landscape
  • Posture of huntsmen creates tension, creating a tense mood  for the whole piece.
  • Tree's create a sense of perspective and depth within the landscape
  • Dogs wear tails low, as if defensive
  • Bird on a branch, by comparison causes ambiguity surrounding the flying creature to the right of the sky.

"A Violent Forcing of the Frog" by Hieronymus Bosch
  • Apocalyptic
    • Armageddon, Biblical
    • Fire and Lava imagery suggests hell
    • Panic, chaos
    • Fantasy
    • Fear
